Weekday Bits : Blonde Redhead

Ten minutes into the concert, our digital camera died. Appalled and desperate, I had to rely heavily on my mobile to capture these shots. So forgive me if you cannot make out the shapes of Kazu and her Italian et ceteras in these photographs.

This was a concert that I did not know any of the song lyrics to and had no idea what the names of the individual band members were. Well, except for Kazu, of course.  I was reluctant and coerced into going for this gig and was a bit sceptical that I would even enjoy it.


But I did.

Once again, the sound system at Esplanade did not disappoint and the concert was a visual treat - second only to last year Imogen Heap's gig (which was truly orgasmic, btw). I STILL don't know any of the songs and I couldn't make out any of the words Kazu was singing to but I didn't feel cheated out of my evening. So I guess, thats a good thing, right?

Bits of My Weekends : Laneway Festival '11

Seriously, if I had an award to give to the best Bits of My Weekends bit, this one takes the cake!!! Last weekend was...omg indescribable! I'd roll over backwards just to share the pure exhilaration of the music festival that is Laneway... but you know what, one HAD to be there to know exactly what we felt!

The lineup was unbelievable. The band that kicked off the performance was Warpaint. Followed by Ladyhawke, Beach House and Deerhunter. Energy was there but not so much. Crowd was also starting to flow in and the rain was pretty docile..IF that was the word to describe rain that wasn't TORRENTIAL yet! We didn't know what was coming! By the time the Canadian-based Holy Fuck played their first song, it became a literal 'Holy Fuck!' of sorts! Energy became frantic, the crowd were enraptured and the people near the front of the stage where we standing were dancing rhythmical to the synth beats and crying out their name. Holy Fuck ruled the sound waves and Brian and Graham are gods on analogs.

There was no turning back when Chk Chk Chk!,Yeasayers, Foals and Tempar Trap took over the stage after that. Energy was superhigh and supercharged, pelts of rain were beating hard on our foreheads and wearing a poncho is a futile effort. Nevertheless, there were plenty of smiles to go around.

What's next ? Glaston?!

Kimya Dawson - Loose Lips

I love The Moldy Peaches. I loved them since Juno and loved them all over again when I saw this Spinner tube and how cute Kimya Dawson is strumming the guitar - like a female version of Jonah Hill with wild hair. And did I even mention musical genius ?

Just a fact snippet - one half of The Moldy Peaches, Aaron Wilkinson died of heroin overdose in 2003 and The Strokes's album Room of Fire was dedicated to his memory.
He was replaced in the band by a certain Adam Green whom, in my personal opinion, truly fits the geeky awkwardness of the band that makes it so appealing. The band’s on a musical hiatus, with all members embarking on their respective solo career.

And just because I mentioned Juno, here's one to kick it ol skool.
Another one of my ol time favourite by them.

SHITDISCO - OK

A fun and creative use of basic pop-ups in a fantastic music vid by a

Scottish dance punk band, Shitdisco. The brill music vid is an awesome brainchild

of a creative and slightly quirky dude from UK.

I loved pop-ups storybook back then when i was a kid
and love it still now, as an adult.
I'd trade bulky paperback novels with small fine print typography
with a graphic-rich 3D paper visuals, anytime.

Our enthusiam for SAHE (stay-at-home-entertainment) was renewed by our new purchase - the XBOX Lips. I was never a fan of karaokes, preferring instead to hide behind the cushion while everyone else yodel into the mike. But Lips allows you to import music from your iPod and its pretty hard to resist when songs such as Tegan & Sara’s 'Walking with A Ghost' and Fiona Apple's cover of 'Across the Universe' came on the screen. Before I knew it, Im already head banging and screaming on to the classic rock song Bohemian Rhapsody with the rest of them.






Yeap, just another reason why we’re staying away from public places during weekends. I’ll post some photos soon. Better yet. I’ll post some videos.

Vinyl Orgasm

Dil has a vinyl record player that sits in one of our rooms gathering dusts ever since one of the amps went ape-shit with smoke.

He had purchased the set (amps, record player and some retro stereophonic equipments) back then before we were married. I told him I remembered seeing a similar model at my grandmother’s place so I pretty much went ballistic when I found out he forked out over 300 bucks to purchased them second hand from an auction.

As much as I love vintage stuff, we were saving up for the wedding back then and I just thought those weren’t necessary.

But I was wrong.

You know when your eyes sees something, your mind immediately connected to it and some weird shit like a ‘zzzzzapp’ and the sounds of angel wings fluttering in the background happens ?

Ok that never happens to me.

But a similar cosmic connection did occur and I knew, yes I knew, I had to get this sigur ros deluxe vinyl box set.

It cost an estimated $300 (including shipping) and I’ll probably eat cabbages for the rest of my life to spend that kind money but you know when there are things that you were born in this life for, and this was IT for me.

Are these cool Icelandic shit or what ?

Rocking. Hard.

I’m not a talented musician.
Hell I can’t even play a single instrument to save my life.
But over the weekend, I was up with six other non-musicians ripping the aural landscape with our rocking guitar riffs and drumbeats on plastic instruments.
When the Guitar Hero World Tour set that aidil pre-ordered was collected on Friday, we unwrapped the box with as much self-restraint as hugh hefner in a whorehouse. And once the set was up and the x symbol was lighted, we became an eclectic mayhem of sounds, unified by one sole purpose - to be rock god-famous, win gigs and accessories like Alice-in-Chains punk wristbands and of course, to unlock even cooler songs like Muse’s Assassin and La Bamba which we will ultimately suck at playing.

Yeah we were rock gods alright.

We pretty much whacked on the whammy bar and chopped the drums the whole night until we decided that its tres uncool to use the preset 3D characters. So we came up with our own band names and personalized our own 3D characters.

Presenting …THE SURS (you may bow now)













We will pretty much do this again every weekend until we find other things to do that doesn’t involve spending copious amounts of money or boiling vegetables. Not that we eat vegetables anyway but… you get my drift.

Plus, I kinda liked having people over to our houses for these pseudo jamming sessions.
It’s good to know that our pod’s an incubator for the musically-inclined (three of my cousins ended up buying real instruments after a session at our house)

The best part ?
You don’t even need talent, just opposable thumbs and a rocking attitude.

I don't know wether to cry or laugh.

Have you ever listened to Don't Panic by Coldplay?
Or even New Slang by The Shins?
It's so beautiful that it's haunting at the same time.
I wonder where this guys come from.
I truthfully believe that these guys
aren't from this planet.
You don't need Prozac or crack to balance

For that case I think you have to die for the cure.

Ive had my ass either on the couch or on the bed pretty much the fucken whole day. Watched a movie and 2 animes back to back namely : Closer, Howl's Moving Castle and Shinchan : The Adult Empire Strikes Back.
Closer pretty much rocked the boat. God, the movie's so intense, I drank in every word/conversation/dialogue/whatever spoken by the characters in the movie like they were right there in front of me. Intense. Watching it was a strange experience. Kind of feels like you're trapped in a noir film sub-genre..thing but with a London colour backdrop. Clive Owen and Natalie Portman's acting was so real, I almost forgot Julia Roberts was in it too. Neeeext stop -- SIN CITY!

Good saturday.
Twas spent chilling and watching indieflicks (City of God, Napolean Dynamite) and snacking and eating bonesteak at diL's place.
Everybody made it that day albeit the last minute arrangements.
Dawned to me that I suck at Scrabble. Should have stuck to Tic-Tac-Toe. Oy vey.

We are this <---> close to getting our coveted 350D.
Selling off our fz-10 camera to my manager since he's so keen. Tried to keep it low-key to other interested buyers who responded to our ad online.
